

Fall Scarecrow Contest—Fall 2009
Be creative and help decorate our streets and community for the fall season. Stop by The Back Door Inn and let them know where to find your entry and they will make sure the judges see your scarecrow or pumpkin. Gift certificates will be awarded to winners for purchases at Memory Lane Gift Shop, lodging at The Back Door Inn or The Garrett Guest House and a hunting and fishing expedition at the Garrett Farm.
Ho Ho Howdy—Santa at the Palace—December 5, 2009
A fun filled morning for families. The morning begins at the Community Center with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Dickens County Historical Commission. Santa arrives by horse at the Palace Theatre and children will be encouraged to share their Christmas wish list with him. Local businesses plan fun events for the children. This is a great way to start your Christmas by shopping in Spur as businesses offer special discounts for this event.
Cowboy Christmas Ball—December 5, 2009
Spur Chamber of Commerce sponsored Christmas dance in the Exhibition Barn at Swenson Park. Cadillac Jack will be the featured band again this year. A limited number of tickets will be sold for this holiday event.
4th Annual Spirit of the West: Santa Land—Dec. 5th, 12th and 19th
Grand opening December 5th and open again on Dec. 12th and 19th at the Girl Scout cottage located at Highway 70 and Burlington Avenue in Spur. Santa will be visiting with all the children. View a live nativity scene with Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, an angel and all the barnyard animals. A beautifully decorated Christmas sleigh will be on display. Warm yourself at the campfire while listening to the live cowboy music. Join in the Christmas Carols that will be sung throughout the evening. Hot cocoa, cider and home baked refreshments will be served and games will be played. Be with us for what promises to be a wonderful gathering of families and friends. Come celebrate the meaning of Christmas!
Spring Fling—TBD
The Spring Fling dance will be held in the Exhibition Barn at Swenson Park in Spur on a Saturday. Entertainment will be provided by Mike Porter. Door prizes will be given away. Dance sponsored by Spur Area Chamber of Commerce.
Highway 70 Garage Sale—May 1, 2010 (1st Saturday in May each year)
70 miles of Garage Sales on Highway 70. Start in Turkey or anywhere in between--travel up Highway 70 to Flomot, Matador, Roaring Springs, Dickens and end up in Spur—stopping along the way to shop. Food and beverages will be available along the way, so plan to spend the entire day shopping on Highway 70.
4-H Youth Horse Show and Timed events series—TBD
Dickens County 4-H Clubs will be sponsoring this series at the Swenson Park Arena. Series starts in June and continues through July. Concessions will be available.
Spur Fun Day—TBD
Annual chili cook off, horseshoe pitching contests and other fun games for the family which will be held at Swenson Park.
Dickens Homecoming—June 4-5, 2010
Come back home and enjoy visiting with folks who return to celebrate and renew their friendships. An entertaining parade, lots of fellowship and meals which will be served in the Senior Citizens building will be a part of this weekend. Traditionally, quilts are raffled during the event.
Swenson Park Barrel Race—Saturday June 12, 2010
Enjoy barrel racing at its finest as ladies from all around Texas come to barrel race in Spur, Texas. This Open 4-D Barrel Race is sponsored by the Windy Sue Productions and Dickens County 4-H Clubs. Books open at 10 a.m. The Exhibition Barn in Swenson Park will be available to vendors selling jewelry, purses, interior decorations, paintings, art and other wares designed specifically for the ladies. Concessions will be available with a nice selection of homemade food and beverages.
Community Cookout and Fireworks Display, White River Lake—July 4, 2010
Come spend the holiday at White River Lake. Begin the weekend with a community cook out at the marina. Experience the beautiful sunset. Continue to relax and enjoy a spectacular display of fireworks as the night sky darkens.
Old Settlers Reunion—August 26-28, 2010
Roaring Springs, Texas will celebrate its 87th Annual Old Settlers Reunion and Ranch Rodeo. A cowboy reunion and rodeo parade will begin the festivities on Thursday, August 26th followed by a general membership meeting. Thursday evening will feature Motley and Dickens County residents competing in events such as cutting, youth barrel race and flag race, open barrel race and a draw pot team roping. Free dance each afternoon to practice those fancy dance steps. Friday and Saturday ten ranch teams will compete in a ranch rodeo which includes ranch bronc riding, team sorting, team branding, cow milking, and team doctoring. Two dances will be held on Friday evening—one for the young at heart and one for the “Old Folks”. A popular country and western band will play for the dance on Saturday evening.
